Scaling up "YouthConnekt" InitiativeJul 7, 2017
From 19 to 21 July 2017, youth from all over the Africa are conveying to Rwanda for the launch of Youth Connekt Africa Summit. The summit will be hosted by the H.E. Paul Kagame, the president of the republic of Rwanda and is organized in partnership with the Ministry of Youth and ICT, UNDP and UNCTAD alongside other partners from both government and private sectors.
Initiated in Rwanda, YouthConnekt is designed to realise the demographic dividend by combining elements of skills development, entrepreneurship, access to jobs and finance, awareness raising on issues related to youth development, and promotion of youth citizenship through community work and inclusion in local and national policy dialogue.
Since its launch in 2012, youthconnekt has allowed 4,000,000 young men and women aged between 16 and 34 to actively participate in Rwanda’s development through Job creation, ICT innovations, Skills development and Citizen engagement. This was made through campaigns, social media events, TV shows, innovation boot camps and conventions organised to engage them to actively participate in Rwanda’s development. 4,000 off-farm jobs have also been created and 450 Youth have been provided with entrepreneurship and social innovation skills for the scalability of their businesses.
Considering the success of the Rwandan version, the initiative will be scaled up to the African level to replicate the same positive impacts from Rwanda. More than 2500 delegates are expected to attend the summit including heads of states, government leaders, leaders of civil society organizations, Africa's development partners, members of the academia, successful young entrepreneurs, artists and youth opinion leaders from across the continent. During the summit, the youth will be exposed to different opportunities that are available including potential investors for aspiring enterpreneurs. Ali baba’s founder and CEO, Jack Ma; the Director for Africa regional bureau, Mr. Abdulaye Mar Dieye and UNCTAD Secretary-General Mukhisa Kituyi are among the guests of honor of the summit alongside the president of the republic of Rwanda.
